Summer

Posted on Sunday 9 July 2006

I am always amazed at the effect the weather can have on people’s moods. This spring/summer time of the year can often bring out the best in people, especially when there has been lots of sunshine (as I have had here recently).

It makes me realise just how many things that we probably don’t even realise must have a massive effect on how we feel; perhaps all we feel is just the result of all these little things put together? Social events seem to have a giant effect on my mood personally, and tend to make up a fair amount of how I feel at any given time. I like to think I am, to a certain extent, in control of myself, but really when I think about it - from an emotional point of view at least - almost completely at the mercy of my external environment over which I have little control.

Back to my original point. What is it about the sunshine that makes people feel happier? Perhaps just the colours and the life about everywhere after spring. I often find I enjoy the anticipation of a season much more than the season itself. In summer I look forward to the isolation and comfort of winter. In winter I am looking forward to the sun, the warmth and the openness of summer. I love this anticipation of “ideal” season, not that I ever really appreciate them when I actually get there…
